How To Plan A Kitchen Design

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Whenever you are considering a kitchen refurbishment, you should remember that overall success will be gauged according to the amount of planning that you do in advance. It’s easy to get overenthusiastic and many of us simply want to roll up our sleeves and pitch in. However, we may not be experts in kitchen design and if we aren’t careful we can run into many problems along the way. Not only can these problems cause setbacks and delay, but they can lead to significant additional expenditure that we were simply not budgeting for.

Planning is not everyone’s forte. Many people suggest that you consult with experts if you’re not predisposed to think things through carefully. If you are the creative type who doesn’t take well to the technicalities, you should ask for help. Remember that a partnership between people that have a tendency to be “left brain” as well as “right brain,” will usually work out best in the end.

It’s best to start with a maximum budget, in other words a line that you really don’t want to cross. Now, you shouldn’t aim to spend the budget at the beginning of your planning sequence, but should set the bar here a lot lower, to take into account the fact that there will invariably be additional costs as you plot your way through this planning sequence. Again, this is why it’s good to talk to experts in the field, who have been through this process before and will be able to give you some pointers at the beginning. It’s amazing how enthusiasm can give way to exasperation, if the planning phase simply reveals a path toward a budget that’s beyond your reach.

To many people budgeting is a necessary evil, but if you are careful to plan this strategically you will be surprised at how much you can accomplish. Remember that many new additions, accents and improvements can be achieved using an alternative approach, once you have all the fundamentals covered.

Don’t make the mistake of planning a room that is purely functional. Almost invariably you and other members of the family will spend much more time in the kitchen than you might have initially envisaged. Don’t forget that this can be a social gathering place, as well as an area for simply cooking meals. Estimate how important this social gathering place is within the bigger scheme of things and ensure that you include this functionality accordingly.

Once again, don’t allow frustration and exasperation to derail your plans for that fantastic kitchen refurbishment of your dreams. By setting realistic goals in the beginning and ensuring that you’re not overreaching as you plan, it’s remarkable how enjoyable this sequence of events can be. The kitchen can be a focal point of your home and many people consider it to be the most important room in the entire house. It does mean different things to different people though and you should consult with each and every member of the family to ensure that their description of the ideal kitchen is “in line” with the plans you ultimately choose.

Contemporary Kitchen Design

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Contemporary kitchens can be a stylish place to practice your culinary skills or even entertain family and friends in, if you get the design right. If you’re striving for the ultimate, luxurious kitchen space and don’t know where to begin in terms of décor then follow these few simple tips to have the kitchen of your dreams.

The Power of Colour

Colour scheme can have an incredible impact on the kitchen as every shade of each colour carries different connotations. Before picking a colour scheme for your new contemporary kitchen design, decide what statement you’d like your kitchen to make. If you want a bright kitchen to devour your cereal in of the morning then white, light woods and a pastel flooring with a matt finish are a perfect modern kitchen choice. Bright kitchens combine modern interior design with family life as they’re an enjoyable place for conversing over family dinner.

If your contemporary kitchen design desire is to have a trendy, sleek kitchen which oozes style and class then black is the perfect accent colour. Work-tops which are black marble with a high-gloss finish can really make a statement to complement wooden cabinet surfaces.

Stainless steel is incredibly popular throughout modern kitchens within the home. Its light reflective properties make it a striking choice for accessories and appliances. Kitchen taps, cooking appliances and displayed utensils can be incredibly eye-catching if in stainless steel. If you have opted for black as an accent colour in your kitchen there’s a variety of accessories available from popular retailers which combine black and stainless steel to bring your kitchen’s classy colour scheme together.

Furniture for Functionality

Kitchen furniture is a necessity in order to prepare fresh food for the family. Some kitchens however, don’t utilise the space available for furniture to its full potential.

Kitchen islands have become an incredibly popular feature of contemporary kitchen design as they utilise the centre of the room which is often left vacant due to having kitchen cabinets connected to the wall. As the kitchen island is central, it makes accessing the sink a whole lot easier – improving the functionality of your kitchen. The surface area on the top of the island provides you with a lot more space for food preparation, storage of equipment and displaying accessories/utensils.

Breakfast bars have also become an increasingly common feature in the contemporary kitchen and can add an extra visual level. They’re designed for eating light meals and breakfast at, rather than dining, so they’re perfect for families with busy lifestyles! Decorate the breakfast bar with a bowl of fruit to encourage healthy eating within the household whilst adding a splash of colour.

Contemporary kitchens can be easy to design and accessorise and look fantastic if you get the colour scheme right! It’s time to rip out that old kitchen, modernise your home and add a touch of class to your cooking and dining experiences.

Why It’s So Much Fun Today To Be A Kitchen Designer

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

Just think how awkward our kitchens used to look a generation or so ago. We didn’t seem to mind back then as we fully understood that this was a functional room and we didn’t necessarily expect it to blend in very well with other design elements of our home. As we became more sophisticated and those sharp lines seemed to be less prominent as our manufacturing capability advanced, so we were able to blend the look of those clunky appliances to make the whole room appear to be seamless. Style is very important and you must love the space that you live in, to say nothing of being able to show it off to your friends and neighbours, of course!

It’s perfectly possible to conceal the presence of all those purely functional units, features and appliances when you take on the role of kitchen designer. For example, the refrigerator which used to be the dominant unit in the kitchen can be hidden behind the cabinet door. First-time visitors may well have to ask you where the fridge actually is when they’re looking for ice for their drink. You can disguise the location of the sink under glass covers these days. You might have to play “hunt for the microwave.”

A lot of the fun involved in creating a brand-new look for your kitchen is in the planning. Some people shy away in horror at the idea of any brainstorming or number crunching, but you have simply got to do this if you’re going to be absolutely happy with the finished result. Never rush to judgement and automatically place one item here and another there, simply because you’ve always done it this way. Remember that this room is also an important area for socialising and you need to integrate this concept into the modern-day kitchen.

Today, it’s all about health and vitality as well. We are getting used to the idea of steam cooking, grilling instead of frying. We are used to water filtration, and even cutting-edge refrigerator functionality that makes sure that food remains fresher. Remember that eating healthily is not a fad and kitchen design is certainly going to be trending in favour of health and fitness.

Above all, inject personality into your room. In a typical open plan arrangement the kitchen is much more a part of the living area than it might have once been. There may, as such, be no boundary between function and lifestyle and there is nothing to say that you shouldn’t blend some of the family functions into the mix when you’re designing this room.

Kitchen redesign can be a considerable job, but it’s likely that that the other favourite area needs a facelift too. You can wear two hats at once and be a bathroom designer as well. Here, advances in technology and fresh new design ideas can totally transform an area where you turn for rejuvenation. Shower technology these days is cutting-edge. Here again, be prepared to think outside the box and don’t automatically assume that every bathroom has to be laid out “just so.”

Deciding On The Appropriate Sink For The Kitchen

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Any sort of modern day kitchen area just isn’t complete without a kitchen sink! In spite of most up-to-date kitchen areas combining dishwashers, the kitchen sinks is always an element of any kitchen design, due to it is easy use for cleaning dishes, and also giving you a fresh indoor water supply for drinking.

Kitchen sinks may be built from many various supplies, each capable to accentuate any variety of kitchen you could have. For instance, you could choose from a range of metals which includes copper, brushed aluminium, brass as well as steel. Despite the fact that metal sinks do give a extremely modern style to the kitchen area, and they are aesthetically desirable, they do call for a lot more maintenance to maintain their condition. Stainless steel is extremely well known within business premises, faculties and also medical centers because it is super easy to keep clean.

Some other kitchen sink materials include enamel that’s extremely popular due to it’s tough wearing properties, marble, ceramic, plastic, stone and concrete and even glass. The material you decide on is totally dependant upon your own personal choice, nonetheless it also must suit your present kitchen design.

Once you’ve picked the material for your kitchen sink, you then simply need to determine the exact design. Kitchen sinks can be bought in single bowl, twin bowl and also three bowl designs. The main bowl of any kitchen sink is often deep enough to provide space for dishes and other kitchen items, as opposed to the second, bowl is usually much more smaller, plus much more shallow, and it is suitable for brief rinsing of dishes or utensils, or perhaps to supply a small area for preparing vegetables. If the sink incorporates a 3rd bowl, this may be a comparable size to the main bowl, and acts as an additional cleaning or storing facility for the dishes.

Most kitchen sinks come with the drain positioned near the rear base of the sink, or at times within the corner. This really is to enhance the amount of space inside the underside cupboard where the sink is actually positioned, because all plumbing as well as pipework is usually set on the wall as opposed to using up plenty of room down the middle of the cabinet. However, such configurations will not allow space for waste disposal devices, so you ought to bear this in your mind when shopping for your own sink configuration.

Sinks can also be installed in diverse positions, such as counter-top or even submerged. This may naturally rely on the sort of kitchen sink you have decided, and also your design of kitchen, but inset kitchen sinks are getting rather more favorite in modern day kitchen areas.

If your kitchen area is a bit more compact, you can also buy sink designs that can be mounted straight into corners of your work space. Those tend to have slightly smaller bowls, but they are a powerful way to maximise work surface space within your kitchen. Of course, if this should not be a possibility, you could choose a single bowl square or even rounded style kitchen sink. There are also numerous designers with their very own range such as Blanco sinks

Once you’ve chosen your own sink, you should also determine the faucets you would like to fully utilise it. This can be individual taps for both hot and cold or a mixer tap. You may also install a water filtration system, delivering fresh, clear filtered water straight from the tap, that is ideal for places which will suffer from ‘hard water’.

Loads Of Accessories Are Available to Customize Your Ready to Assemble Kitchen Cabinets

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Between the defining moment a homeowner makes the decision to tackle their kitchen and the celebration of its completion, there is a tremendous amount of information to absorb. Research, however, is kept to a minimum since the most extensive selection of Ready to Assemble kitchen cabinets is now available online. And because the expenses of a storefront are eliminated, purchasing discount cabinets from the convenience of your laptop or computer not only saves energy, it may also stretch your budget substantially, allowing for a greater range of selection.

When shopping for ready to put together kitchen cabinets, measurements are of utmost importance, since areas can be neither stretched nor shrunk to accommodate RTA cabinets that don’t quite fit. In addition to snug fit, the knowledgeable do-it-yourselfer will discover all the available add-ons necessary for giving the kitchen a professional custom finish, as opposed to an amateur “loving-hands-at-home” appearance. For example, since ready to assemble kitchen cabinets can seldom be expected to fit flawlessly in their allotted spaces, fillers should be picked out simultaneously with the rest of the installations so that they match seamlessly. The same goes for selecting moldings and end pieces which offer the most attractive custom-made appearance. Moreover, the home owner can be as innovative as he likes, mixing and matching woods, materials and colors.

Of course, before any purchases are made, one must choose the most practical design for the kitchen functionality. Subsequently so many more choices are required. What is your style? What sort of finish best suits your home, and of course your finances? Are you going for a inviting cottage look, a modern, sophisticated result or an eclectic mix? If your family includes a burgeoning Martha Stewart, sliding shelves, spice racks, cookbook nooks and adjustable areas for pots and pans might be of interest. If you favor solid wood and pre-finished interiors, will you need to give up adjustable or rollout shelves? Again, planning and education are very important before the toolbox comes out.

The list of possibilities for kitchen design is virtually endless. Before selecting finishes, it’s important to think about the material for counter tops, and again this process can be daunting: tile, slate, glass, plastic, granite or other stones, concrete, and a dozen other choices are available. The types and materials of hardware are every bit as challenging, what with handles, drawer slides, rollouts, hinges and the rest of the extensive list to chose from, all different, each with its own positives and negatives and, of course, price tag.

And that’s just the beginning. Thought must be given to garages in which to park the refrigerator and dishwasher, styles of valences and corbels to give the tops and bottoms of the cupboards a custom appearance, decorative toe kicks that can take a beating, the desirability of lazy-susans in the corners, light rails for under-cabinet lighting, sink tip-outs, garbage rollouts, hampers and quite a few other options.

In addition to all your accessory choices, take care in choosing your merchant. It is advisable to choose an online supplier with a professional staff to help you design your kitchen and make certain you don’t overlook any significant choices. Take into account such things as how quickly the vendor returns messages or calls, because for the new do-it-yourselfer, it is likely that you will have issues during the installation process. While many accessories can be added as budget permits, such as shelf roll outs, others must be purchased with the cabinets, such as fillers, so they fit properly in your space. During the shopping process, get informed, talk with at least one or two vendors for advice and support, then prepare to create the personalized kitchen you’ve always wanted.

Kitchen Design Topics: Countertops

Friday, April 8th, 2011

If cabinets are the ‘cake’ of luxury kitchen design, then countertops are most definitely the cherry on top. Long gone are the days of just opting for the most sympathetic granite laminate for fitted kitchens. Today, countertops come in a wealth of quality materials and a spectrum of colours. They can hold a whole kitchen design together or make a bold statement as a stand out feature. And it is worth taking the time to get this right. In much the same way as an artist selects their canvas with care, your countertops should offer you the perfect work surface and be a real pleasure to use.

Your choice in countertops will naturally be affected by the cabinetry and other elements within your fitted kitchen, but do be aware of the multitude of options available to you. For exceptional interior design in London, choose a company which specializes in kitchen design. They will be able to offer the greatest choice in fitted kitchens and will have the experience to guide you.

When you start thinking about countertops decide first what your style is and what look you are trying to achieve with your kitchen design. If you are drawn to sleek, contemporary fitted kitchens, consider corian, or even glass or stainless steel for that extra wow factor. Real wood countertops are another option and also lend themselves to the more traditionally styled fitted kitchen, where you might also expect to see granite and marble worktops. For a more rustic kitchen design, butcher block and tiled countertops can add real charm. It is important however, not to feel fettered by these conventional choices. Interior design in London is fresh and innovative, so do not be afraid to think outside the box.

Consider too how your kitchen will be used. For example, if you breakfast there, a kitchen design which adapts a worktop into a breakfast bar could be a smart option. If you do a lot of cooking, installing hot rods will give a heat proof space for hot pans. If your fitted kitchen will be subject to lots of wear and tear, discuss durable and/or scratch resistant materials with your interior design consultant in London. If you entertain in your fitted kitchen, consider curved corners for a sleek finish and to open up your space.

Countertops have a big impact on the look of a finished kitchen but are far from the whole story. To achieve a high-end luxury finish for your fitted kitchen, you are well advised to appoint a company who not only specialises in interior design in London, but who is committed to finessing your kitchen design — from your countertops right down to the smallest details.

Kitchen Renovations – Choosing Great Cabinets

Friday, February 25th, 2011

A good kitchen is a big asset for a house. Not only does it provide for the daily nutrition needs for your family, it also increases the value of a house. For homeowners planning to have their kitchen renovations for houses in any city, one of the tasks that they have to do to achieve a wonderful kitchen transformation is choosing good cabinets. Getting the best cabinets is easy if you know what you are looking for. So here are some tips that you might find useful for your hunt for the perfect cabinets for your kitchen.

The first thing in this particular task of finding great cabinets for your kitchen is to set aside a budget for your cabinets. This way you can keep your search to those that would be within your financial capacity. It minimizes the selection and saves you time and effort if the selection was broader. Of course everything must be within the budget to minimize, if not eliminate, the possible delays that could be encountered.

You must also consider the space and the area where you want to have your cabinets. You can’t have cramped up space in your kitchen, because that would be very bothersome to whoever would prepare the meals and do the cooking. Remember that the kitchen is not a storage room where you have to keep all sorts of things that you needed to hide away. Its main function is as an area where food is prepared, and could also serve as a mess hall for those who do not want to eat in the dining hall. It would be very inconvenient to have a cramped up kitchen. It would ruin its looks and minimize its functionality. So take a look at your kitchen area, check the design for your kitchen, and keep to the reasonable size of the cabinets.

Decide if you want to make the cabinets by yourself, or if you want to buy the custom-made ones. It would definitely be great if you could show your preferences in the cabinets you made if you got the skills to do them. But it’s okay if you lack such skills, there are builders you can hire for the job and they can do it for you. Or there are a lot of custom-made cabinets that have great quality, and you can select from among the ones that are available. The cabinets which are available for purchase at hardware stores usually have some kind of warranty, which is a good bonus for a sturdy quality cabinet that is worth its price. You can surely find great cabinets that will suit to your taste.

If you decide to make your own cabinets, make sure that you have good quality materials. The sturdier the better, that is an unspoken rule in kitchen cabinets. Not only do you have to consider the safety factor, there is also the appearance factor. A good cabinet not only is sturdy, but would also look great in your kitchen.

Speaking of which, you have to see to it that the custom-made cabinets you have bought or the cabinets you did by yourself would go well with the whole kitchen design. It would be useless to have ugly cabinets for your kitchen renovations, since the main purpose of the project is to improve the kitchens appearance and functionality.

If you have done all these, and if you have everything ready, then you can start working on the renovation. The sooner the project finishes, the better, since it is your kitchen that is being worked on. You can keep living on pizza and meals from some nearby fast-food chains, which is why you can’t waste too much time.

In addition to all these tips, choosing wonderful cabinets for your kitchen renovations would be made even easier if you consult some interior designers or contractors.

Kitchen Renovations – Four Tips On How To Live Through Your Kitchen Renovation

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

You planned it all out—how your kitchen will look like afterwards, the budget that you would probably need, the permits that need to be prepared and the paperwork that have to be submitted. You have already consulted a contractor and hired a builder. You have looked up on the materials, the kitchen appliances equipments… You believe that you already have it all covered, and you think that you are ready to start with your major kitchen renovations.

So you get started. Now while the kitchen is under renovations, only then did you realize that you can’t prepare meals at home for a while since your kitchen is having a major make-over that could probably take more than a few days, two to three weeks, or even a month if you want to change starting with your kitchen floors to your cupboards. Indeed, this is one of the troubles of having a major kitchen renovation. You usually don’t have two kitchens in a home, and while your kitchen is undergoing some serious transformation, the daily food preparation for you and your family is going to be a real problem.

Well, it would be alright if you are all alone and you are on a diet, but that is not usually the case for most homeowners. It will not be good to let your family go hungry for a month until your kitchen is done, so here are four things you can do that will get you through your kitchen renovations.

Set up a temporary kitchen in some other convenient area in your house. You’re sure to find a place in your house where you can prepare meals for the time being, while your kitchen is still under renovations. It would be okay to just order some pizza, but it wouldn’t be a good and nutritious meal for the kids, plus there would come a time that they would get bored of always eating pizza and would prefer some homemade cooking. You can also have some barbecue outside once in a while, as long as it’s on your budget. Your children would love this.

Remember to include a food allowance to your financial preparations, and make sure that you allowed for a two months worth of food. That’s to make sure that even if the renovation goes for more than a month, at least you won’t have to starve yourself and your kids. When you say food allowance, that doesn’t just mean the ingredients for the meals to be prepared at home, it also includes the cash you would need if you want to dine at some restaurant or call for some pizza.

You might also want to tell your mom and dad that you are having your kitchen renovations. They probably invite you to dinner at their home. Don’t you just miss your mom and her home-cooking? This way you get to have dinner with them again. Moreover, it saves you too, and in more ways than one. ?

Don’t forget to consult your contractor or builder and talk to him about the project before starting anything. You can ask him to make a timeline about when the project might be completed which would help you prepare for your kitchen renovations survival plan. Aside from that, you can also ask if there could be problems that might come up so that you can make some precautions and backup solutions for delays or problems that might crop up. Great contractors for kitchen renovations would do their best to speed up the work and accommodate to your preferences and concerns.

Kitchen Renovations – Working on a Budget

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Kitchen renovation is the process of implementing the changes and improvements you wanted in your kitchen for a great meal preparation satisfaction. The cost of this process depends on a lot of factors, such as the age of your home, the extent of the renovation needs of your kitchen, your personal furnishing preferences and additional equipments and appliances. Now if you are on a tight budget you have to explore all your options. There are surely ways to achieve what you wanted for your kitchen renovations; despite a limit to your funds.

With restricted funds, you have to be creative and wise in planning and going through the whole project. It’s not that difficult to do so, you just have to use your imagination. If you already have a design in mind, then check to see if you can afford all the materials necessary. There are instances where you can’t purchase a certain material so you have to make do with what your finances can afford. Still, make sure that it is a quality material, and that it fits with the design of your kitchen. Financial capacity might limit you, but aesthetics is very important too, so you have to take it into account for your optimum satisfaction.

Try to be as prudent as possible when shopping for things for your kitchen. Buy only the staple things, and list all the second priority equipments in a sheet of paper so that you can buy them the next chance you get when you have enough funds to make the purchase. Don’t get a certain item if you don’t really need it, even though you think that it would look absolutely perfect for your kitchen. Always be mindful that you are working on a budget for your home improvement project. It’s easy to be swayed by advertisements if you forget it. Also, find quality items that fit to your budget. If you just buy something because it’s cheap, it might cost you more for repairs.

For the room decorations, use the things that you already have. There might be some cute and nice things that may have been kept in your basement, such as old retro paintings or other tapestries. You could also use some mementos such as baseball cards and make some wall hangings out of them. Your precious china, medals, or posters could also be used to pimp up the room. Do a scavenging hunt for hidden treasures in your attic and basement and you are sure to find what you needed. Just don’t to overdo it, because you might end up with a suffocating kitchen. In kitchen decors, remember that less is always more.

Also, a nice color scheme is a good start for improving your kitchens aesthetics. You can start with your wall color, then your cabinets, down to your floors and even your countertop. Choose the colors that induce a welcoming ambiance. You might want to have a color pallet that has a calming effect, or some energy reviving colors. You can also play with the colors that surround your home. For instance, if you are living in a coastal area, try some light blue or coastal green color scheme, and if you are in a place with trees and flowers, you can try green and yellow or wood brown color scheme. Whatever you choose, try to find colors that reflect your personality or your preferences.

See? Working on a limited budget for your kitchen renovation doesn’t need to be so hard. If you know what you are doing and if you are sincerely aiming for the completion of your home improvement project, then these tips would surely help you on your way to achieving your ideal kitchen.

Kitchen Renovations – East-Meets-West Kitchen Design Concept

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

A houses kitchen is a free zone for the person who loves to cook, and it is also the oasis of the rest of the family. It is important for a kitchen to convey a welcoming atmosphere, which is why no matter how expensive your kitchen renovations usually are, the efforts and expenses dedicated to improving the kitchen is always worth it.

Last weekend when we visited a friend’s home, I was very eager to see the kitchen since we were also trying to see fresh kitchen renovations ideas. The area really looks unique and amazing. It has a very Asian ambiance, a combination of red and green walls with a very natural shade of brown for its cabinets. But what was very noticeable in the kitchen was the clear contrast between the color scheme and the very modern furniture. The kitchen is like an East-Meet-West film scenario. But instead of being unattractive to the eyes, it looks very welcoming. It’s almost like a chef in western outfit (a white coat, pants and headwear) could come out any moment to cook some all-Asian cuisines for us!

It’s not unordinary to see a room with opposing characteristics that reflects an image of fun and enjoyment. However, such designs, if not done in careful moderation, could end up making the room look revolting. The owner of the kitchen we saw told us he consulted a professional interior designer to do the area. When asked if he spent a lot on the kitchen, he revealed that it was not as expensive as it looks. Apparently, at the beginning of the project he told the designer that he wanted a modern unique look for the kitchen with the brown cabinets and green walls, and he also told him his budget for it. The designer said that originally the cost of the project would be more than the budget he prepared for the renovations, but with a few twist and adjustments on the design the owner preferred they could still come up with an amazing kitchen design with the same costs.

The room started off with a very Asian look. The walls were painted with a nice jade color which is very soothing to the eyes and has a calming effect, and the lower areas of the room’s walls are lined with lava red. The cabinets have a raw umber color, adding to the very natural ambiance of the place. The sink is made of stainless steel, the floor is faux wood. The electric appliances are not the top-grade ones, but their quality is still noticeable. Apparently the designer told my friend to shop for certain brands of quality appliance that are more metallic in color.

The kitchen, and the whole house for that matter, was only a few months old. Obviously, it will take a few years or so for the kitchen to need a renovation. But when the time comes for the inevitable revamp, it probably wouldn’t need to have a change in design. Just some restoration works would do, since it really looks great as it is.

A lot of people would want to try creating their own version of the East-Meet-West kitchen design concept, or something very similar to it. Any homeowner would want to achieve a fun atmosphere in their kitchen. If you are one of them, it would be best to consult an interior kitchen designer. True enough, your kitchen renovations could be more expensive if you hire a professional designer, but it is the best way to make sure that every dollar you spend for your cooking area is worth it.
