Monday, April 9th, 2012

By Laura Gregory

When you are wanting to have a snack, which food do you try to get a hold of? Cakes or candy? What about trying to become healthy? Finding snacks that are hearty and that taste good can be a big challenge, especially if your go-to snacks are those that are rich in salt or sugar. In this article, we are going to teach you how you can make your own nutritious snacks to meet all of those cravings. All of the snacks discussed in this article are snacks you can eat even when you are trying to keep an eye on your weight and diet. Are you thinking that’s too good to be true? Check it out!

Dipped Pretzels are a tasty and hearty snack that you can indulge in that won’t make you feel like you are restricting yourself in taste or calories. Melt half a cup of semi sweet chocolate on your stovetop until it is just melted. It takes two minutes to do this and make sure you stir it up very well before you use it. Dip low salt or low sodium pretzels into the melted chocolate until they are well coated and then lay them out on parchment in a single layer. Cool them at room temperature for approximately 60 minutes or in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.

Delicious Tortilla Chips are snacks that, unbelievably, you can put together on your own at home. When you buy tortilla chips at the grocery store, the chips are very much coated in salt and are extremely unhealthy. In this snack, you create the chips yourself with corn tortillas. Take a minimum of ten corn tortillas and cut them into sixths. Place the corn tortilla pieces onto a baking sheet and then spray it with a mixture of canola oil, a quarter teaspoon of chili powder, a half a teaspoon of cumin, and a quarter teaspoon of salt. Be sure each piece is coated with the mixture and then bake the chips at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Allow the chips to cool off completely before eating them.

Prepare your very own caramel corn! You may thing that caramel corn is something you just can’t indulge in due to the high sugar and calorie count. Try this healthy buy yummy recipe instead. In a large pot, melt two tablespoons of butter and mix in two tablespoons of brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt, and a tablespoon of water. Use your whisk to blend it all together and then add approximately seven cups of air popped popcorn. You can even add in a little lightly salted peanuts if you prefer. Stir until the popcorn and peanuts (if you added them) are thoroughly and evenly coated and then let all of it cool before you try to consume it.

If you are fine doing a little research, you can find all sorts of healthy recipes that give you the tastes you crave but have a lot less calories and bad ingredients. There are a lot of great tasting selections for hearty snacks available. It is important to be patient so that you can find them and then prepare them yourself. It doesn’t have to be tough to stay healthy. Staying healthy entirely achievable!

Fondant Cake Decorating Tips For Beginners

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Many people just love to decorate cakes. The sky is the limit for the designs that you can use. Traditional butter cream frosting is most often used by home bakers, but the addition of fondant to your skill set can be great as well. Everyone has looked at wonderful cakes in magazines and on food network TV shows. Fondant is almost always used to make these works of art. The cakes look much cleaner and more elegant this way. Don’t be afraid to experiment with using fondant if you have never tried it before. It is straightforward and simple to use. Some people choose to mix it while others buy the premade kind such as satin ice fondant.

When first starting out using fondant on cupcakes and cakes, here are some tips to help you. It is simplest to start with already made products that do not need color added or mixing. This way, all you need to do is roll it out evenly and then cover your cake. Flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, and caramel can be purchased. Many different colors are also available including black, blue, red, white, yellow, pink, green, ivory, and many more. An extra benefit to buying premade fondant for sale is that the color will be identical to what you used before. When rolling out the icing, you should roll it to a thickness of around one quarter of an inch. Using a cake recipe that produces a sturdy cake that does not crumble is also quite helpful. This helps the cake to maintain its shape without caving in or crumbling during the covering process.

The use of cookie cutters can add great interest to the cake when you use them to cut shapes out of thin fondant. After the whole cake has been covered in a base layer, you can then place these cut outs on top. Making flowers is also fun to do. While flowers are more difficult for the beginner, they are something that all bakers should learn how to make.

Always make sure to store unused fondant in air tight containers. If you do not, it might dry out quickly and become unusable. Make sure to use it when it is at room temperature. If you do not know where to buy fondant, stores online sell many colors. The most popular kind is satin ice fondant. Get creative when making your cakes. Also be sure to enjoy yourself and have fun. Having fun is the key to making great cakes.

The Power Of Candles

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

For centuries, the humble candle has found varied, enduring uses, from the practical to the esoteric. The arrival of the electric bulb in the nineteenth century spelt a decline in its use. Recent times have witnessed a resurgence of interest in this ancient source of light. Candles are valued as symbols of romance and celebration, while candle-making is a popular hobby. The warm, soothing glow of candles, then and now, remains unmatched.

Candles as mood setters

Candles are an effective and inexpensive way to define the atmosphere of a room. Tall tapers in a living or dining area spell formality. Floating candles convey tranquillity. A squat, cylindrical or square shape conveys a homely ambience. In the bedroom, candles create a sensual, intimate setting. A ho-hum bathroom dons the luxurious look of a spa where you can relax after a tough day; all it takes are a few lighted candles surrounding the tub!

Scented candles containing essential oils are thought to influence moods although the quantity used is too small to induce any lasting psychological effects. Jasmine, lavender and orange scents help in calming anger. Patchouli, chamomile, sandalwood and rose relieve anxiety. Vanilla and ylang-ylang reduce stress while peppermint, clove, pine and lemon dispel fatigue.

You can even encourage positive moods with scented candles! Try cinnamon for creativity, lemon, rose and honeysuckle for peace and happiness, eucalyptus for good concentration and orange for optimism.

Colours and meanings

Just as wall colours influence a room’s dominant mood, so too with candle colours. In esoteric and spiritual practices, candles are selected according to the properties or emotions associated with different colours:

White – spirituality and peace

Red – strength, vigour and energy

Pink – romance and friendship

Green – fertility, plenitude and harmony

Blue – healing, inspiration and good health

Yellow – cheerfulness and devotion

Candles and décor

Candles offer endless options for you to exercise your creativity while decorating your home.

Pillar candles effectively accent coffee tables, cluster them in a bowl or plate or place them in separate holders. Perk up kitchen and dining tables choosing from votive candles, spherical candles, tapers or tea lights.

Focus attention on an isolated fireplace with a few candles placed in tall candle holders. A kitchen cabinet will look interesting with a candle surrounded by artificial fruits. Silk flowers, seashells, pebbles, dried berries, nuts and crystals are just some candle accompaniments with which you can play around with for various effects.

Bring home some candles today and discover their magical effects!

A Clean Kitchen Can Be A Green Kitchen

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

The media will tell you that our kitchens, family slow cookers, blenders, toasters and other applicances are covered with all sorts of horrible bacteria. They’ll also tell you that you need to constantly disinfect and clean anything with powerful (and expensive) store-bought cleansers.

In reality, you can keep your kitchen sparkling clean with some very green and inexpensive household products. You will be able to both save the earth and save yourself in the wallet.

The key green cleaners that we recommend are a big box of baking soda, a gallon of vinegar and table salt in as big a container as you can buy it. Keep in mind that baking soda is a fantastic green cleaner for the entire home. It also will not contaminate food and is odor-free. Baking soda is only somewhat abrasive and it will not harm any of your kitchen surfaces. Whether you have linoleum, or expensive marble, your kitchen is safe.

Another good product to have in combination with the vinegar is some lemons or lemon juice. The lemon juice will clean as vinegar does, but it has a more pleasant odor. Below are some details on how to ‘green clean’ some key areas of your kitchen.

Sink Drains

Don’t use regular drain cleaners . These very corrosive products are very bad for the environment, and they can damage your pipes. If you have a clog you should first try to use boiling water to clear it. You also can try a drain cleaner with enzyme action, which is better than nasty acids.

After you have cleaned out the drain, you should do regular maintenance on your drain so it does not happen again. About once per week, you should put ¼ of a cup of baking soda down the kitchen drain. Then you should pour down ½ cup of vinegar. You should then let these two products sit there for about twenty minutes. Do not put anything else in the drain for that 20 minutes. While this is starting, begin to boil some water. Then you should flush out the drain with that boiled water.

If you have had a lot of greasy dishes lately, you may need to turbocharge this treatment. You can mix in ½ of a cup of salt and ½ of a cup of baking soda and pour them in the drain. Then you can flush the mixture out with your hottest tap water.

Oven

As you can probably guess, you should never use those super-powerful oven cleaners. They tell you to get everyone out of your home when using these products, so you probably should be using something else. They are not friendly for the environment.

A safer option is for you to sprinkle baking soda (1/4 of an inch or so) on the bottom of your oven. Spray it down with a spray bottle of water. Spray it every few hours to keep it a bit wet. Let it sit there overnight. Come morning, you should scrape out the soda and the oven grime with a wet sponge.

The best way to deal with the oven is to do a little bit of this sort of cleaning every few weeks. This way you do not have a massive build up of oven grime to tackle all at once.

Stovetop

You can clean any spills on your stovetop quite easily if you sprinkle it with salt. The salt will absorb most of the spill. It also is mildly abrasive but it will not hurt the surface. If you spill something in the electric burner, you can put salt and cinnamon on it and wipe it right away. You can clean ceramic glass cooktops with an old toothbrush and some baking soda.

How Healthy Eating Is Excellent For You!

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

By Gordon Zwillenberg

Today’s diet has been shown to be both unhealthy and dangerous. The food we eat has too much salt, too much fat and not enough minerals and vitamins. On a nutritional sense, it’s a recipe for disaster.

In today’s fast food and get it fixed in minutes, the current diet has canned foods, frozen dinners, eating out and plenty of sodas. We’ve replaced fast food for bad nutrition, high blood pressure and obesity. We are not eating healthy.

What Can You Do?

To begin healthy eating, you want to start not using the following:

1. Salt: may be the toughest spice to eliminate. Salt is everywhere in cheese, canned soup, frozen meals and when you have lunch out. The average person consumes more salt than they need. Salt is the leading cause for high blood pressure.

2. Sugar: is found in cakes, donuts, fruit juices and soda. Sugar is stored in the body and eventually turns to fat.

3. Fat: try to limit the fat in beef and chicken. Instead, you can enjoy healthy fats found in salmon, sardines and herring.

How Can You Begin to Eat Healthy?

There are a lot of things to change for healthy eating. Modifying our food will take time. Your built in habits are too strong to break. So, just keep in mind:

1. Take Your Time – change just does not happen over night. Try to modify your food intake, a little at a time.

2. When planning your meals, keep it simple. This way, your diet will be fun and not a challenge to do.

3. Reward yourself, every time you make a change. A minor accomplishment is better than none, when you are make an effort to eat healthy.

What Should You Eat?

For Healthy Eating, you can comsume the following foods:

1. Fruits and Vegetables – should be part of every meal and snack. They are low in calories. Fruits and Vegetables are packed with vitamins, fiber and antioxidants. Choose the darker fruits and vegetables; they contain more of the vitamins and nutrients that your body needs. These fruits and vegetables include: broccoli, carrots, beets and berries.

2. Whole Grains – supply healthy carbohydrates to your diet. Unhealthy carbohydrates, such as white flour, white rice and potatoes, can give rise to spikes in blood sugar levels and unstable energy levels. Healthy carbohydrates, on the other hand, contain whole wheat flour, brown rice, sweet potatoes and barley.

3. Healthy Fats – include foods rich in Omega 3 Fats. These may consist of salmon, sardines, corn and walnuts. You may also obtain healthy fats from avocados, olive oil, nuts and pumpkin seeds.

4. Calcium – used to keep your bones strong and healthy. You can get hold of calcium from milk, green vegetables, and beans (black, pinto, kidney, etc.).

What Is The Best Way To Shop For Food?

When shopping for food, you might:

1. Make a List – Write down the items that you require. If you have time, read over the list again. A list will keep you on track in buying what you need, and a list will keep you from purchasing the things that you do not need.

2. Plan Your Meals – You can plan your meals for the week. This way, your list reflects your plans. By planning your meals, you won’t be eating out as much, and you will be eating healthy.

3. Keep It Simple – Meals don’t need to be complicated. You could start out small, and then build up healthy eating over time.

You Can Eat Healthy, Too!

Healthy Eating is good for you. By eliminating salt, sugar and fat, you are on your way to healthy eating. By adding fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and calcium, you can add energy to your routine. By planning your meals, you can insure healthy eating for the weeks to come.

Good Luck!

Ways to Spice up Your Cooking

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

By Lawrence Reaves

Do you have some recipes that you make all the time that you are a bit tired of? Are you looking for great ways to make your cooking a little more exciting? Some great tips to make your regular recipes a bit more interesting are listed below.

First, it is a good idea to use more seasoning with your regular recipes. When we talk about seasoning, what we are really talking about is salt. Salt is actually one of the most important spices in cooking. Many cooks who are just starting out do not use enough salt. Do not be shy of using salt. We strongly recommend that you use Kosher salt and not regular table salt. Before you grill your steak or your poultry, try putting Kosher salt on it. We think you will see what a big taste difference it makes. You should not just stop with meats though. When you cook your pasta, you should be sure to salt the water before you heat it up. Try about 1 handful of your best Kosher salt for every pot of water. The very same is the case when you are boiling potatoes to do your mashed potatoes. The water should have a salty taste when you start.

Next, you should try to use cooking liquids that have some flavor. Water has no taste. So if you use regular water to steam your veggies or make soup, you are not doing anything to give the food flavor. We like to use beef or chicken stock or even wine rather than water. If you use veggie stock instead of water when you make rice, it can add great flavor.

Another great idea is to try to make your food tangy. That’s right, try to add some vinegar, lemon juice or wine to your food. This gives the food more acidity and will give it a lot more flavor. It also will complement the sweet flavors in your dish. If your food seems to be missing something even after you have put in salt, very often it needs more acid. Very often, you just need to add some lemon juice to really spark some great flavors. For people who need to have less sodium, you can add flavor with lemon or lime juice. It can do a fine job of giving more flavor when you can’t use salt.

Also, we really like to use a lot of textures that contrast in our cooking. Think about the mouth feel when you bite into some roasted chicken. You have a skin that is really crispy when the meat on the inside is very soft and juicy. This contrast is what makes eating such a dish so pleasant. How can you add this kind of contrast to another common dish? How about spicing up some mashed potatoes? What you can do is to take some saut©ed vegetables and put it in with your potatoes as you are whipping them. This will give them a great flavor and some interesting texture. Or you can top your mac and cheese with some crumbs from bread.

The last thing we like to add to increase flavor to routine dishes is to use more butter. Butter, next to salt, is the most critical ingredient in cooking. There is just no substitute for the flavor and feel of butter in the mouth. If you think you are using butter in your cooking makes it less healthy, this is not really true. Margarine has as much fat as butter, and many of the ingredients in margarine have been shown to cause heart disease.

Food Steamers and Rice Cookers are a fantastic way to prepare flavorful meals that are tasty and healthy! – Article by Lawrence Reaves

The Role Of Plumbers

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

By Keith Pollow

A plumber is a distinct and specialized trade that deals with all of the complex aspects that are involved in providing the mechanisms necessary to move fresh water into a home and to carry used water out into the sewage system. Plumbers can work on a variety of different areas within a home, from the sink in a kitchen to the water main in a basement that draws water from a larger municipal system. In addition to pipes, a plumber can also handle the installation of appliances and other devices that are part of the plumbing inside of a home.

In order to be considered a plumber, most areas require that an individual undergo a good amount of training. Like many trades, this first involves learning the basic skills through a school or other educational institution and then secondly involves spending time learning from a more skilled tradesperson. After many years of working as a professional, the tradesperson can achieve a higher certification and then teach other new apprentices. The regulations that govern what qualifications a plumber must hold in order to work are different depending on the region but generally include some type of basic business license and possibly membership in a trade union or professional plumbing association.

Some of the basic tasks that plumbers perform have to do with the drains and fixtures that are used every day in almost all homes. They often tighten pipe fittings, clear debris from the inside of pipes and drains, ensure that water is flowing properly, and replace loose or spent parts on fixtures like faucets. More moderate jobs usually deal with replacing portions of a plumbing system, disassembling a sequence of pipes for repair or cleaning, and testing the pipes in a home to make certain that there are no leaks or blockages in the network.

There are many very advanced jobs that plumbers also perform. These can involve assembling an entire circuit of pipes during the construction of a new house, or adding new pipes to a home when a new bathroom or sink is installed. Monitoring the pressure in the pipes in relation to important appliances is a responsibility that can lead to the installation of pressure bladders or other devices that help keep the pipes working. Depending on some factors, a plumber might also be called upon to maintain pipes that carry different types of gas used as fuel throughout a home because many of the requirements are similar to those needed for traditional plumbing.

Even though plumbers have a wide range of skills that can be used to keep a home running smoothly, there are actually a few specialized areas of plumbing that are considered outside of the trade. Some of these titles include pipelayers, sprinklerfitters, and steamfitters. Each of these specializations deals with a narrow area of the wider plumbing skill set. No matter what the focus is, a plumber must also be responsible for knowing the laws and regulations in an area that dictate exactly how a plumbing system should operate so a home can pass a thorough inspection.
