Vegetable Scene: Farmers’ Markets and More

January 26th, 2012

According to the New York Times, American’s are eating less meat than ever before. This is good news for the nations many cows, pigs, chickens and ducks. It is bad news for the American meat packing industry, but they have been in hog heaven for too long. The decline of carnivorism coincides with a rise in flexatrianism, vegetarianism, and locavorianism. These new eating habits are leading to many great food events that focus on healthy eating, local food, and produce. These free events are a great showcase of the wonderful produce the state has to offer. Many people think of A big, urban city when they think of New York State. Although the city is great, The countyside grows some of the world’s best apples, pumpkins, broccoli, asparagus, chard, carrots, and eggplants. Dig in!

One of my favorite food events is the Jackson Heights Farmers’ Market. This market is a veritable who’s who of tasty vegetables. It also features cooking demonstrations, education, and music. Plus it’s a great way to get to know your neighbors and local farmers. These farm fresh food products are some of the best the state has to offer. Recent changes in the scheduling mean that the market is now open all year round! See change of seasons is reflected in the produce selection in this incredible food event. The green market is a general hub for activity and family fun all year round. It is a music event, food event, and rollicking good time rolled into one. All the money spent goes to local farmers and helps the local economy.

Chelsea Market is also a great place to hunt down tasty eats. Their focus is broader and they include baked goods, coffee, deserts, meat, fish, and restaurants. That said, it is also a bit more expensive than the Jackson Heights market. They also host a number of upcoming events for food, theater, dance and music.

Shifting back to Queens, if you want something more refined you can attend the Evening of Fine Foods. This Queens event is at Terrace on the Park, a large and elegant Queens event space. This event is equal parts food tasting, networking, and education. It takes place February 7th so if you want to get tickets you should buy them soon! Queens has some of the most diverse food in the borough and that is well reflected in the food in Queens and events in Queens.

Creating A Homey Family Kitchen

January 25th, 2012

Having your family spend quality time talking and eating together is a fantastic way to communicate with each other and maintain a healthy relationship as a family. Creating a suitable and well- structured kitchen can provide you with the perfect family bat cave; a place where everyone comes together to eat breakfast and dinner and discuss work and education. Planning a kitchen renovation can be a wonderful way of creating this place, but there are things to consider before any remodeling starts.

You must consider factors such as the layout of the kitchen, the space available to you, suitable features and fixtures and an appropriate color and design. Doing this correctly can have a wonderful effect on both the design and presentation of your home, and the how practical your kitchen is for your family’s needs. Here are a few simple ideas to consider when creating your dream family kitchen!

Have a Suitable Kitchen Layout

Planning ahead and thinking about where you want to position features such as the family dining table (if you decide to place this in the kitchen) can help you get a good idea of how much space you will have left over. Having a suitable amount of space left in your kitchen is quite important if any family members make home cooked meals on a regular basis; squeezing through a crammed kitchen whilst preparing an family dinner is not practical and can potentially be fairly dangerous.

If you choose to purchase a matching set of kitchen appliances then strategically space them out around your kitchen, this is an effective way of bringing a matching color scheme together. Coordinate this with the color and tone of curtains and blinds, tea, coffee and sugar pots and other small features around the kitchen.

Kitchen Family Features

Ensure the fixtures and features of your new kitchen provide for all of your family’s needs. If the working members are usually in a rush first thing in the morning then an coffee maker that has a timed feature may be hugely useful to them, as might a high powered toaster. Modern fridges are available with built in water and ice dispensers, this can prove to be a great way of encouraging the young ones to drink more water. The simple function of pressing a button to get water and having ice available next to it is somehow much more appealing to kids than water from kitchen taps! Including modern, hi-tech features is a great way to interest the kids and encourage them to get involved. Adding a smoothie maker or a juicer can encourage healthy living and help them to get their recommended five fruit and vegetables a day.

So there we are; some simple kitchen design ideas that can help you to create a kitchen that looks great, serves the family well and can bring the whole house together.

How To Plan A Kitchen Design

January 25th, 2012

Whenever you are considering a kitchen refurbishment, you should remember that overall success will be gauged according to the amount of planning that you do in advance. It’s easy to get overenthusiastic and many of us simply want to roll up our sleeves and pitch in. However, we may not be experts in kitchen design and if we aren’t careful we can run into many problems along the way. Not only can these problems cause setbacks and delay, but they can lead to significant additional expenditure that we were simply not budgeting for.

Planning is not everyone’s forte. Many people suggest that you consult with experts if you’re not predisposed to think things through carefully. If you are the creative type who doesn’t take well to the technicalities, you should ask for help. Remember that a partnership between people that have a tendency to be “left brain” as well as “right brain,” will usually work out best in the end.

It’s best to start with a maximum budget, in other words a line that you really don’t want to cross. Now, you shouldn’t aim to spend the budget at the beginning of your planning sequence, but should set the bar here a lot lower, to take into account the fact that there will invariably be additional costs as you plot your way through this planning sequence. Again, this is why it’s good to talk to experts in the field, who have been through this process before and will be able to give you some pointers at the beginning. It’s amazing how enthusiasm can give way to exasperation, if the planning phase simply reveals a path toward a budget that’s beyond your reach.

To many people budgeting is a necessary evil, but if you are careful to plan this strategically you will be surprised at how much you can accomplish. Remember that many new additions, accents and improvements can be achieved using an alternative approach, once you have all the fundamentals covered.

Don’t make the mistake of planning a room that is purely functional. Almost invariably you and other members of the family will spend much more time in the kitchen than you might have initially envisaged. Don’t forget that this can be a social gathering place, as well as an area for simply cooking meals. Estimate how important this social gathering place is within the bigger scheme of things and ensure that you include this functionality accordingly.

Once again, don’t allow frustration and exasperation to derail your plans for that fantastic kitchen refurbishment of your dreams. By setting realistic goals in the beginning and ensuring that you’re not overreaching as you plan, it’s remarkable how enjoyable this sequence of events can be. The kitchen can be a focal point of your home and many people consider it to be the most important room in the entire house. It does mean different things to different people though and you should consult with each and every member of the family to ensure that their description of the ideal kitchen is “in line” with the plans you ultimately choose.

Kitchen Renovation and Basic Layouts

January 25th, 2012

Kitchen renovation can be a really exciting project to take on. You’ll have a whole new kitchen to enjoy, almost as if moving into a new place except with the comfort of knowing that it is still your home. When considering how you want your kitchen to look, it’s important to pay attention to common layouts that may work best in your home.

The most common and least space consuming is the one wall kitchen. That means all of your appliances and counter space are up against a single wall. Not only does it utilize a small amount of space, it leaves more floor space for other things like an island or small table.Another popular layout for kitchen renovation in a narrow room is the corridor layout. This is where the middle has space to move with the cabinets, counter space and appliances on opposite sides of each other. It gives a limited amount of work space and you wouldn’t be able to have too many people in there at once, but when given only a narrow room to work in, it’s a perfect way to get everything to fit.

L-shaped plans are popular because it does away with crowding issues, giving you more floorspace in general. You’ll have your range and counter space on one wall, fridge and other counter space and small appliances on the adjacent wall. It makes more sense for bigger families that may see a lot of traffic in and out of the kitchen at the same time.If you have the space, you can use a floor plan for your kitchen renovation that will create two work stations. This includes a smaller L-shaped island area that would have the oven range and a sink, with the rest of the other appliances on countertops against the walls. Allowing for more to be done at the same time, this is a great setup for those who love to cook, especially multiple things at once.

When choosing a layout you need to consider the time it’ll take, the budget, and how your appliances will be setup. Everything has to meet your criteria, so brainstorm a bit before heading into any project. Talk to a contractor about your ideas and make sure that electrical and plumbing will work in your home for the layout you want. You’ll be sure to have that perfect kitchen in no time and enjoy the new space!

How To Choose The Perfect Refrigerator For Your Kitchen

January 24th, 2012

Refrigerators are a modern day essential for the home; they delay the rate at which food decays and chill drinks to make them more enjoyable. Every untrained housewife needs a refrigerator, and the time may come when you’ll need to purchase a new one for your kitchen. In this post you’ll find design and style ideas, as well as a brief history of this modern day essential.

A Brief History

The first refrigerator was built in 1834 by Jacob Perkins (an Anglo-American investor, physicist and mechanical engineer). However, the concept and design of a refrigerator had been in existence since the 1700s, and cooling instruments for centuries before that. Refrigerators have now become a compulsory part of a person’s home, as they are used to keep food or liquids at a cool temperature so that it they can be stored for a longer period of time (it is also incredibly refreshing to take a sip of a nice cold drink).

Throughout the late ’90s, most refrigerators were the standard white colour, with not much design about them. It was also quite common to have a refrigerator and a separate freezer. Today, most people have a combined refrigerator and freezer, called a fridge-freezer, with numerous designs and added gadgets.

Design and Appearance

You can opt for numerous colours, from the classic white to silver and steel. There are even wacky, vibrant colours for those who dare to break conventions! You can also decide on your fridge to freezer size ratio (those who like to cook opt for a bigger fridge, due to there being more storage space for fresh food in comparison to frozen).

There are generally two popular designs of fridge-freezer, with the American-Style fridge-freezer and the alternative style that is generally found in Britain and other European countries. The American-Style fridge-freezer has areas that are side by side vertically, so that the doors meet in the middle and open akin to patio doors. The other design generally has two sections, with the fridge on top of the freezer or vice-versa.

If you are stuck on which design and colour would suit your kitchen, take into account the design and colour of other objects within the room; such as your kitchen taps, kitchen cupboard doors and all your other kitchen appliances, and try to match them on a similar design level and colour scheme. Stainless steel is currently a popular colour for refrigerators and can look sleek in a modern kitchen.

Additional Functions

Gadgets such as drink or ice dispensers can be built into a fridge-freezer, making it much easier to grab a nice, ice-cold drink. You can also look out for a “frost-free” option, which eliminates the need for defrosting. If your freezer does become so full of frost that you cannot open the freezer drawers, you will need to defrost your fridge, which can be tiresome and can put your frozen food at risk as you will need to remove it from the freezer.

It May Be Instant, But It’s Not Really Coffee

January 23rd, 2012

Pop round a friends or neighbors house in the UK for a coffee and the chances are very high that you will be served a mug of bland instant coffee. This doesn’t happen in the US.

The reason may be due to past unavailability, but this is no longer the case. In the past, most offices and places of work in the UK had little or no provision for real coffee – instant coffee was the only option to a thirsty worker via a vending machine or jar and kettle. This has never been an issue in the US, where it seems fresh coffee has always been the preferred choice. Just watch any old cop show going back in time as far as you like – you would always see a coffee pot not far from the action.

Let’s be honest here. Instant coffee, made by adding hot water to powder or granules is not very nice when compared to the real thing. It bears little or no resemblance to the proper stuff. Real coffee has that amazing complicated aroma, intense taste and real personality. Coffee made from instant granules has little smell, a bland taste and absolutely no personality whatsoever!

Slick instant coffee TV commercials continue to infest TV in the UK. This may have tricked the general public into putting up with such a lousy beverage? There are two or three very large commercial brands that have captured most of the market and have no intension of letting their sales slip.

Thank goodess for the invasion of US coffee shops into the UK high street. These have really taken root over the last 10-15 years and this has slowly been educating the public that real coffee is best. Indeed, it’s almost impossible to walk anywhere in central London without having at least two coffee shops in view at any one time. Thanks heavens.

It appears that things have been changing and now freshly brewed coffee is available almost anywhere. The acceptance of vending machines that now brew a reasonable bean to cup coffee has been a great help. Now nearly all premises serving visitors have fresh coffee on the menu.

In the home however the situation hasn’t changed. Very few households in the UK have a facility to brew freshly brewed coffee from the bean. The majority still stick with instant coffee even if they have a coffee maker for convenience. Yes, it takes longer to brew a proper cup, and there is more mess to clear up. Fresh coffee needs to be looked after properly and stored well. The final drink however is divine and beyond comparison.

Hopefully in the not too distant future, the Brits will throw out their jars of instant and get stuck into the real thing.

Coffee is a fascinating subject – Take a look at our website to discover more about the wonderful world of coffee and coffee machines.

Remodeling Your Kitchen On A Budget

January 22nd, 2012

Your kitchen is one of the busiest centers in your home, where practicality and movement are on an equal level to the overall visual effect you’re trying to create, and how you feel when you’re in that space.

So, a kitchen remodeling project is a common ambition. But, in these times where money is tight, how do you get the results you need when your budget is limited? Writer and remodeling enthusiast Stephanie Staszko is here with a few pointers on where to start …

Kitchen remodelling is incredibly popular at this time of year, but with the expense of Christmas on the horizon it can seem ludicrous to start thinking about a new kitchen. Using thorough research techniques and subtle changes however, you can create high impact changes that will transform your kitchen without the high price tag.

Make subtle changes using lighting, fixtures, kitchen cabinet accessories

Certain subtle changes to your kitchen design and décor can completely transform the appearance of the room. If you currently have dim lighting in your kitchen then switching to halogen bulbs can help to brighten things up. The additional light won’t only enhance your visibility, it’ll also make your appliances and fittings appear shinier, which is essential if you’re aiming for a contemporary look.

Chrome is currently an incredibly popular finish for kitchen taps , cupboard handles and hinges and displayed crockery. Chrome fixtures complement black appliances such as refrigerators and toasters incredibly well which is why black is currently the height of kitchen fashion. If you’re due to upgrade kitchen appliances opt for black, energy efficient models. Energy efficiency is essential if you want to keep energy bills to a minimum so think of it as a long term investment.

Research reputable kitchen remodelers

If your kitchen is desperately falling into a state of disrepair then there are methods in which you can have a new and improved fitted kitchen on a budget without compromising quality. To get a bargain you’ll have to dedicate time to research and obtain recommendations from reliable sources. If you have any friends or acquaintances who’ve just had a fitted kitchen enquire; who fitted it, what their standard of work was like and most importantly, if they’re happy with the finished project.

Gather details of several different recommended and reputable kitchen remodelers who are willing to provide you with a quote. Now comes the interesting bit – you’ll need to haggle and bargain if you want a high quality kitchen for a reasonable price. Often kitchen remodelers can be swayed on their price or may throw a few extras in for the amount you pay. Never accept the first price (unless it’s very reasonable). Obviously you’ll want the installer who boasted the best recommendation, so work on bargaining with them to reach a price that suits you both.

Gather ideas for your dream kitchen to help you visualize what you want

If you’re unsure about what aspect of your kitchen needs transforming in order for you to feel satisfied, then starting a scrap book can help you to gather some ideas. Collect snippets of kitchens which you love from home magazines and interior design websites, then identify any recurring themes. Perhaps it’s a kitchen island that you desire? Or maybe you find those marble worktops simply irresistible?

If you call in a professional to do renovation work it can help them to understand exactly what you want if you show them pictures. Many people are unhappy with the result of their kitchen transformation due to misunderstandings between homeowner and kitchen fitter on exactly what the homeowner wants. Be very clear and describe how you visualise the finished project to the best of your ability to avoid confusion and disappointment – having the work redone can be incredibly costly.

Home improvement television shows can help to spark some ideas that you may never have thought of. They often advise you of how much each particular renovation project typically costs, so pay attention to find some hidden gems and note them down in your trusty scrapbook.

Kitchen remodeling doesn’t have to break the bank, you can get the kitchen you so badly desire if you use common sense and creativity. Also, getting your hands dirty with a spot of DIY can save you money for small projects. So get those overalls on!

Revamp your Kitchen to Revitalise your Cooking Skills

January 22nd, 2012

Have you ever gotten home from a hard days’ work with an overwhelming sense of dread that you have to begin preparing a meal for you and your family. What is it that is diminishing your motivation? Maybe it’s actually the drab style of your kitchen that’s draining your enthusiasm? A few superficial changes could awaken the kitchen and actually make it an enjoyable room to spend time in. Who wouldn’t want to practice their culinary expertise in a modern, stylish and highly functional kitchen?

Little changes to appearance can make a big difference. Let’s start with your kitchen sink, as the sink is possibly the most used object within it, and why? Well you use it to not only wash dishes, but to also get drinking water and to of course keep up with your hand hygiene! Remind yourself to keep your hands clean, with a sink that gleams!

Kitchen taps are the most important aspect of a kitchen sink, and here is where the changes can begin! To modernise your kitchen sink, you could opt for a different and trendier style of tap. The most modern and functional kitchen taps are mixer taps, which are essentially two taps in one, with one handle/lever to turn it either off, or on to hot or cold. There are several different designs you can choose from, ranging from ones that resemble the end of an umbrella, to ones that have a squared shape, to give it more of an “edge” and even to ones that you can extend and move around to direct the spray accordingly.

What other small changes can you make within your kitchen? How about looking at your cupboard doors and handles? Nothing can make your kitchen look more changed and new, than having new cupboard doors and handles, and this doesn’t include the cost of having whole new cupboards fitted. You could choose a new style of wood for your cupboard doors, maybe choosing a lighter colour as this will brighten up your kitchen by reflecting the light. Then by choosing new, more modern handles, this will also make a dramatic change. You could opt for silver or chrome handles, which are very popular in most modernised kitchens today. Even though the change of a handle doesn’t sound like a big change at all, you’ll realise how it styles your kitchen and gives it a smart look.

So once you’ve altered a few details in your kitchen, that shouldn’t be too expensive… You can get down to cooking that delicious food for you and your family. These small changes can completely alter how modern your kitchen is, so don’t be afraid to add a little style.

Be In Control Of Fire Safety Within Your Home

January 22nd, 2012

There are lots of obligations that come with living in your own home and this is especially true when you are a family with children. The safety and well-being of your children are important but there is always some hazard that you missed. Having a fire inside your home is definitely a frightening thought but you can certainly have a plan so that your family can leave safely and quickly if there is one or take steps to minimize the chance of fire. This information will examine easy methods to ensure that your family is going to be safe from home fires.

Among the first things you should do is to go through the entire house and look for any potential fire hazards. For instance, look for frayed wires or fatigued cables on your electrical appliances. Additionally it is important to ensure that sockets around the house are not overloaded and if you need extra sockets fitting or old appliances need replacing it is worth the investment for the safety of your family. Within older residences you may want a professional electrician to check the wiring in your house to see if it needs to be updated. Around Christmas sometimes you will have additional lights around the house both indoors and outdoors and these can be a fire hazard if you do not follow safety guidelines.

For those who have young little children, you need to take precautions around the house especially if they distract you. For example, if you’re cooking oils and you get called away, it’s possible you’ll forget the oil is still cooking. If you have an open fire within your house, you’ll want an adequate fireguard around this and once again this is particularly important with young children. If you carry out any kind of renovations, you should not attempt to do anything that you are not qualified to fix like electrical wiring.

It is a wise idea to give some thought about the way you would leave your home in the event of a fire and you should involve all of the family in these discussions. If you set up strong safety measures in your home, you want to be sure that you are able to disable them quickly in the event of a fire. You can acquire fire protection products that make excellent assets for your home. Stuff like fire blankets, escape ladders, smoke sensors and extinguishers are types of fire safety products. Smoke sensors are going to ensure you are given an early warning of the problem and this is essential as when a fire takes hold toxic smoke and heat can make it very difficult to escape.

It is an unfortunate fact that every year we hear about tragedies in the home caused by fire but you can prevent this from happening to you by taking the right precautions.
